NEW DELHI: In a relief to the protesting UPSC aspirants, the government on Monday announced that marks for the comprehension section will not be added to the final merit list though the CSAT format will be retained.
MoS Department of Personnel & Training Jitendra Singh made the announcement in Lok Sabha.
He said, "The government is of the opinion that in the Civil Services Preliminary examination, Paper 2, the marks of the section "English Language comprehension skills" should not be included for gradation or merit."
Also, the government announced that the students who gave the exam in 2011 (when CSAT format was introduced) will be allowed another attempt in 2015.
The aspirants have been demanding that the CSAT be scrapped as they term it discriminatory.
The CSAT-II paper in the UPSC prelim exam carries questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills, including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision-making and problem-solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy, and English language comprehension skills (of Class 10 level).
Students have been protesting against the exam saying there is a need to change the second paper as it makes it difficult for people coming from rural areas of Hindi-speaking states to crack the exam.
The students argue that the questions asked in language comprehension skills are asked in English and no Hindi translations are provided. They want this to be changed.
The UPSC exam row had echoed in the Rajya Sabha on Monday as opposition members pressed the government to find a solution.
The opposition members once again raised the issue of discrimination with students on the basis of language in the UPSC exam. (With inputs from agencies) source from Yahoo news...
