The Stairway of the Mountain Bueren, Belgium

The Stairway of the Mountain Bueren or Montagne de Bueren Stairs called Mount de Buren is located about 1 km north-east of the Cathedral of Liege, Belgium. The mountain Bueren is a staircase of 374 steps. Its leads a quarter of Hors-Château (Hors-Chteau; literally outside the castle) on the mound, where before there was Liege fortress. Therefore, the park with the remains of walls and a viewing platform called the Citadel Park or Parc de la Citadelle.


The decision on the construction of the staircase that has 374 steps, was graphed in 1875. It is named in honor of a nobleman Vincent de Buren (about 1440-1505), which in October 1468 led an uprising against the Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold, who sought to subdue Liege. As a result, the uprising was brutally suppressed, and Liege was given to plunder the Burgundians.

At regular intervals on the stairs arranged site with benches where we can relax during the ascent. As we approach the top of the hill with a staircase opens more and more spectacular views of the city and the river Maas.

Every year on the first weekend in October is the event takes place nightly hills (Nocturne des Coteaux), during which on the stairs placed thousands of candles. Leaving skyward and transformed candlelight staircase - an unforgettable sight. [First Image credit peter daerden]
